A visionary leader

Commissioner Harry Southerland

For more than a decade, Commissioner Harry Southerland has transformed vision into visible progress across Hoke County. From championing $150 million in new public investments to securing record wage increases for county employees, his leadership has been defined by one simple principle: when government works for people, communities thrive.

Harry has led with both heart and results—bringing long-overdue projects from talk to reality. Under his tenure, Hoke County broke ground on the $27 million Recreation and Aquatic Center, launched construction of a $43 million Justice Center, expanded local housing options, built new community centers in Tylertown and Cameron Village, and invested in youth, safety, and small business opportunity at unprecedented levels.

His record is proof that collaboration works. Whether it’s connecting faith leaders to economic development, standing with educators to strengthen our schools, or making sure first responders have the pay and tools they deserve, Harry brings people together to solve problems and deliver results.

A trusted voice across North Carolina, he’s been recognized as the 2021 County Commissioner of the Year, honored with the Order of the Longleaf Pine, and celebrated among Blueprint NC’s 2024 Hometown Heroes.

Harry Southerland believes leadership isn’t about position—it’s about progress. And his vision for Hoke County is clear: a growing, connected, and inclusive county where every resident can see themselves in the future we’re building together.

Voices of Hoke

  • “I’ve worked for Hoke County for over a decade, and I’ve never seen leadership that truly understands what it means to support working people the way Commissioner Southerland does. When he helped raise the minimum wage for county employees to $15 an hour, that wasn’t just policy—it was dignity. That decision meant groceries were easier to afford, bills were paid on time, and families could breathe a little easier. He didn’t just talk about valuing workers—he proved it.”

    —Hoke County Employee & Parent

  • “When I look at what has changed in Hoke County over the past several years, I see Commissioner Harry Southerland’s fingerprints everywhere. From new community centers like Cameron Village and Tylertown, to the aquatic and recreation center where our kids can learn, grow, and stay active—these projects have brought real life back into our neighborhoods. He doesn’t just build buildings; he builds community. He listens, he shows up, and he delivers.”

    —Longtime Hoke County Resident

  • “Commissioner Southerland understands that strong communities require strong institutions. His leadership helped secure historic raises for sheriff’s deputies, expand resources for public safety, and move forward critical investments like the Justice Center, Fire Training Facility, and Domestic Violence Shelter. As someone who has worked closely with county systems, I can say with confidence that Harry leads with fairness, vision, and an unwavering commitment to protecting and serving every resident of Hoke County.”
